How to raise RPM in a niche that pays badly

RPM is revenue per thousand pageviews, so it moves on two things: what an impression is worth, and how many impressions a visit produces. In a low-rate niche the first is fixed and the second is wide open — which is exactly how food sites out-earn verticals with several times their click value.

  1. Measure pages per session first. This is the lever with the most room in it. A visitor who opens three pages is worth three times one who bounces, at identical rates, and most low-rate sites sit near one.
  2. Link forward from the end of every article. Not a sidebar widget people ignore — a specific, relevant next question in the text where the reader has just finished. Related-post grids convert far worse than a sentence that names what to read next.
  3. Give long content room to carry more units. A page that genuinely needs 1,500 words supports more placements without crowding. Padding a 400-word answer to reach that length does not; it annoys readers and adds nothing search rewards.
  4. Find the commercial corner of your subject. Almost every low-rate niche has a high-rate adjacency — hardware in gaming, professional qualifications in education, insurance in automotive. Those pages lift the site average.
  5. Judge every change on revenue per session. Reported RPM can improve while earnings fall, because it ignores the visitors whose ad blocker meant no impression happened at all.

The half of RPM you control

RPM is revenue divided by pageviews, times a thousand. Two things move it:

  1. What an impression is worth — set by advertisers, and not yours to change
  2. How many impressions a visit produces — entirely yours

Almost every guide addresses the first, which is the one you cannot influence.
The interesting arithmetic is in the second, and it is large enough to overturn
the ranking that CPC tables imply.

Food is the standing proof. Its per-click rates are
unremarkable. It produces some of the best publisher revenue on the internet,
because a meal-planning visitor opens the main dish, a side, a dessert and
something for the leftovers, then stays on each page while actually cooking.
Four pageviews at a modest rate beats one pageview at a good one.

Start with pages per session

This is where the room is, and most low-rate sites sit close to one.

The single most effective change is not a widget. It is linking forward from
the end of the article, in the text, to a specific next question.
A reader who
has just finished something and is told exactly what to read next behaves
completely differently from one shown a grid of thumbnails.

That means writing in clusters rather than in isolation. Three articles that
answer a reader's first, second and third question in sequence produce three
pageviews. Three unrelated articles on the same topic produce one each.

Length, honestly

Longer pages support more placements without crowding, and search tends to
reward depth. Both are true, and both get abused.

The version that works: a page that genuinely needs 1,500 words to answer the
question properly. The version that does not: a 400-word answer padded to 1,500,
which annoys the reader, raises the bounce rate you were trying to lower, and
adds nothing that search values.

If you cannot say what the extra thousand words are for, they are working
against you.

Find your commercial corner

Almost every low-rate niche has a high-rate adjacency, and covering it lifts the
whole site's average.

  • Gaming — hardware, peripherals and prebuilt systems, where the
    advertisers are retailers with margins rather than free-to-play publishers
  • Education — professional qualifications and career change,
    where an institution is bidding for an enrolment worth thousands
  • Automotive — the insurance adjacency,
    which carries some of the highest rates in advertising
  • Travel — booking-intent content rather than inspiration

None of these requires abandoning your subject. They are the part of it where
somebody is about to spend money.

Know when display is the wrong business

In some niches the honest answer is that display is the smallest line and always
will be.

Gaming is the clearest case: young audiences, the worst ad-block rates online,
and advertisers competing on install budgets. Sites that do well there earn from
memberships, merchandise, sponsorship and hardware affiliate — with display as a
supplement rather than the engine.

Recognising that early is worth more than optimising placements for a year.

Measure the right number

Whatever you change, judge it on revenue per session, not reported RPM.

Reported RPM only counts impressions that were served, so it silently excludes
every visitor whose ad blocker meant nothing loaded. Move a unit, watch reported
RPM improve, and you may have learned nothing about whether the site earns more —
the two numbers use different denominators,
and only one of them is your business.
